Job Title: Farrowing Manager – Pasture‑Based Hog Operation
Location: Gunthorp Farms – Lagrange, IN
Employment Type: Full-time (6 days/week)

About the Role We’re looking for a full-time Farrowing Manager to manage and improve our farrowing team and help us care for our sows, piglets, and land. We operate a pastured farrowing system, where sows farrow in outdoor huts and paddocks rather than standard indoor crates. This requires strong attention to animal comfort, weather conditions, and land management. You’ll be a key part of our daily operations – from chores and feed grinding to fencing and shelter maintenance – helping keep the farrowing farm running smoothly and continuously improving.

What You’ll Be Doing

Core Responsibilities

  • Complete farrowing chores 6 days per week
  • Grind all feed necessary for the farrowing farm
  • Prepare, repair, and maintain:
  • Shelters, Waterers, Feeders, and Fences within the farrowing farm
  • Manage pen allocation and preparation for sows
  • Infrastructure construction, preparation, maintenance, storage

Example Weekly Schedule

  • Monday–Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Farrowing chores (daily)
  • Feed grinding several days per week
  • Preparation, maintenance, and repair of shelter, water, feed, and fence infrastructure
  • Weaning and market hog consolidation (every 3 and 6 weeks, respectively)
  • Farm projects as assigned
  • Saturday: 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Farrowing chores

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Reliable transportation and robust attendance
  • Able to: Stand for long periods of time, Lift at least 50 lbs repeatedly, and safely work around livestock
  • Equipment experience, including: Comfort working around tractors and other farm machinery, Ability to back up a trailer
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all seasons
  • Ability to castrate and vaccinate

Desirable Experience

Experience with:

  • Tractor and loader operation
  • Feed grinders
  • Hay wagons
  • Chainsaws
  • Livestock or farrowing experience

What Success Looks Like

In this role, success will be measured by:

  • Strong weaning rates and piglet performance
  • Good soil and land conditions around the farrowing areas
  • Calm, healthy sows with good demeanor
  • Visible, steady improvement in the farrowing farm (not just “getting by”)
